Detroit artist wins $100,000 at ArtPrize in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - A Burbank, Calif., artist has won the top cash prize at the fourth annual ArtPrizeinternational competition in Grand Rapids.

Organizers say in a release Friday that Adonne Khare has taken the $200,000 publicly-decided ArtPrize Award for her large-scale graphite on paper drawing, "Elephants."

The annual competition began Sept. 19. This year's installment featured entries from 1,517 artists from 56 countries and 45 states. The works are displayed at venues across downtown Grand Rapids. A list of the 10 finalists for the public vote was earlier announced by organizers.

A total of $560,000 was awarded to artists of 16 installations.

More than 47,000 people cast over 412,500 votes.

Design 99 from Detroit was awarded the first-ever, $100,000 Juried Grand Prize for "Displacement," a found artifacts installation.
