Baby Chimpanzee stealing hearts at the Detroit Zoo
12:31 PM, Sep 4, 2013
ROYAL OAK, MICH - She's already stealing hearts and she's barely a month old. Her name is Zuhura. That's Swahili for "morning star."
All this excitement is for the newly born female chimpanzee at the Detroit Zoo. Zuhura and mom, Chiana, are doing just fine.
And, of course, Papa Imara, couldn't be more proud.
In keeping with the meaning of her name, Zuhura was born in the early morning hours of Saturday, August 10th, right at the Detroit Zoo in the Great Apes of Harambee exhibit.
Mother Chiana has always called the Detroit Zoo home having been born there in 1994. Grandma Abby is now 30 years old. Curator of Mammals Robert Lessnau couldn't be happier, "It's exciting to have three generations of chimps represented here." He adds, ""Chiana is proving to be a great first-time mom."
Zuhura is only one of four chimpanzees that have been born in a U.S. Association of Zoos and Aquariums' accredited zoo this year.
