DETROIT (WXYZ) - We are learning more about why a Pit Bull may have attacked and killed a baby girl.
Little Tarilyn Bowles was less than a month old when she was attacked yesterday. Investigators tell 7 Action News one theory is the dog bit the baby's face after smelling infant formula in her mouth.
The incident happened on the 7700 block of Stahelin on the city's west side.
Police say a mother was visiting the house and set her 3-week-old baby down on the floor in a car seat after feeding her. The woman didn't know a Pit Bull was loose in the house and it attacked the baby.
The girl was rushed to the hospital, but she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
People who live in the area say the dog that attacked was about 2-3 years old, and seemed friendly. He often played with the 2 other children that lived in the home.
"I didn't know him to have a mean bone in his body," said Don Wood, who lived next door.
One neighbor said his Yorkie had even played with the pit bull with no problems. He was shocked at the attack.
Police say they are investigating what happened, and Child Protective Services has been called. It is not known whether anyone will face charges.
The dog was taken in by Animal Control officers, and has been euthanized.
