BBB warns of online scam involving shoppng website

SOUTHFIELD, MICH (WXYZ) - Don't be fooled by ads you might see on line for a website called Affordable Overstock.

That's the warning coming from the Better Business Bureau.

Affordable Overstock might be seen on Craig's List as affordableshoppingnetwork.com, or possibly as expertoverstock.com, liguidationclearancestock.com, overstockclearcesales.com, overstockclearcestock.com, and perhaps other similar deviations.

There has been a large response from people who have found this company on Craigslist where an anonymous email can be obtained. Consumers who order with the company use this email and never receive the merchandise they purchased.

The BBB says that buyers would go to the company website and wrongly see that the company was given an A+ rating by the bureau. They could use any of the major credit cards.

But, purchasers would find that they were asked to wire the money. And, although they might get a notice saying the order was being processed. They would never receive a tracking number.

Finally, following up, consumers would find that the website was no longer available and inquiries were ignored.

The Better Business Bureau reminds us that if we're going to use Craigslist, be careful:
-Deal locally with those that you can (safely) meet in person.

· Never wire funds via Western Union, Moneygram, MoneyPak or any other wire service.

· When selling, beware of fake cashier checks and money orders. Banks will cash them and then hold you responsible when the fake is discovered weeks later.

· Keep in mind that Craigslist is not involved in any transaction, and does not handle payments, guarantee transactions, provide escrow services, or offer "buyer protection" or "seller certification"

· Check out a business with the Better Business Bureau at bbb.org, even if the site shows the BBB seal - they could be erroneously using the seal

· Never give out financial information (bank account number, social security number, eBay/PayPal info, address, phone number, etc.)

· Avoid deals involving shipping or escrow services

· Do not purchase expensive items sight-unseen or rent housing without seeing the interior, or. In all likelihood, that housing unit is not actually for rent, and that cheap item does not exist.
