(WXYZ) - He was a legend in the boxing ring, but Tommy Hearns is ready to take on another fight.
This time it's against blight in his old neighborhood.
His boxing career took him around the world, but Tommy Hearns' heart never left his east side neighborhood.
"It was a nice area. I learned a lot about life." said Hearns.
The block he grew up on is unrecognizable.
"The whole block, houses used to be on both sides of the street. Now you see one house and one apartment building that is burnt up," said Hearns.
The world boxing champ isn't giving up on Helen Street. With help of his long time publicist, Jackie Kallen, and her friend Ryan Fishman, Hearns is planning a massive clean up of the area July 9th.
But they still need volunteers and heavy equipment.
If you would like to help, the clean-up is scheduled for July 9th at Helen and East Grand Blvd.
It goes from 10 am until 1 pm. If you would like to donate the use of heavy equipment or need more information, you can contact Ryan Fishman via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
