Brighton, Mich (WXYZ) - Do you want to have better focus? Do you want help treating anxiety, depression, ADHD, ADD, or even autism?
One alternative therapy says it can help with ALL of these problems.
It is called Brain Core Therpy. It is offered at the Braincore Training Clinic in Brighton.
It is a new type of neuro-feedback therapy, which has been around for decades.
Sensors measure brainwaves. Patients have to control their brainwaves in order to play a video game. The theory is that by learning to control your brainwaves, you can control neurological disorders.
“Brain waves become dis-regulated, and if they are out of sink with what they should be, that causes symptoms to appear,” said Brain Core Training Director Jennifer Eisele.
“I didn’t think it would work,” said Shannon Miles.
Miles has a 12-year-old son with ADHD. She says he has been on medication since he was 7 years old. Since started Brain Core Training, he has been able to take a lower dose of medication.
“He is able to focus better,” said Miles. “He has better impulse control, and his attitude about doing school is better.”
She isn’t alone. Seven Action News talked to several parents and patients who believe in the therapy.
However, the therapy has its critics.
“It may not hurt you,” said Dr. Stefani Hines, MD, a developmental behavioral pediatrician at Beaumont. “ But you’re going to be spending a lot of time and energy on something that has been proven to work.”
Dr. Hines says the therapy that often costs about $2,000 isn’t scientifically proven to help the many issues it claims to control.
“The things that cause those are vast,” said Hines. “It is a little bit like snake oil.
How could that one treatment option help so many conditions?”
Some parents say they don’t need scientific studies. They have put the therapy to the test on their kids, and it works. You can check out the Braincore Clinic's website here.
