HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) - We've heard these rumors before and now we're hearing them again. Cuts at Selfridge Air Base.
This all comes from Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel's new proposed Defense Budget for next year.
There are rumblings in Washington D.C. that this budget would result in reductions that would be felt at the Selfridge Air National Guard base in Harrison Township.
The budget is looking to do away with an entire fleet of A-10 Thunderbolt aircraft. That, of course, would include what's based at Selfridge.
What's being considered by the Defense Secretary are changes based on the feeling that a smaller military is the way to go.
It's estimated the retirement of the Air Force A-10s could save as much as $3.5 billion over 5 years.
Other defense spending cuts are on the table, but the Selfridge Air Base houses the A-10.
The bottom line will be what Congress decides.
