DETROIT, MICH (WXYZ) - As far as electric cars go, there's always room for one more.
And soon you'll have the opportunity to buy it.
Lots of excitement at Cadillac where the Converj Concept is taking center stage. It's now moving into production and you will come to know it as Cadillac ELR.
The excitement comes from the fact that it's an extended range vehicle. It primarily uses electricity generated by a T-shaped lithium ion battery, an electric drive unit, and also a 4 cylinder engine generator.
The car essentially is electric driven. But, when the battery cells begin to decline, the car kicks into the extended range system allowing it to go much further, like miles further.
It's being called the ELR to show off its electric technology. The 3 letter designation also keeps in sync with the international model name game.
Cadillac Marketing Vice President Don Butler says the excitement to the car has been instantaneous, "Like other milestone Cadillac models of the past, the ELR will offer something not otherwise present - the combination of electric propulsion with striking design and the fun of luxury coupe driving."
Enthusiasm for the ELR is sounded by GM VIce President of Global Design Ed Welburn who says the car reflects a nice blend of electrical technology and the comforts of a luxury touring coupe. He adds, "There's no mistaking it for anything but a Cadillac, an aggressive, forward-leaning profile and proportion showcases a uniquely shaped, modern vision of a personal luxury 2+2."
There's soon more to come from Cadillac. Another concept car is being announced and the XTS luxury sedan along with the compact ATS sedan will both be headed for the production line.
