BLOOMFIELD HILLS (WXYZ) - When Barb Webb and her wife of two years, Kristen, decided they were ready to start a family, the same-sex couple figured out a way to make it happen, and Webb says, "We were really excited when it worked." But it seems building that happy home would come at a price.
Webb, a chemistry teacher for 9 years at catholic Marian High School in Bloomfield Hills, says she sat down with school officials to tell them she was pregnant in hopes of working out some sort of leave of absence because her contract prohibits her from being public with anything that is contrary to Catholic doctrine.
Webb says she was making an effort to be discreet about her pregnancy, but school officials terminated her when she wouldn't resign.
Marian High is operated by the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) in Monroe. A spokesperson for IHM says they are unable to comment because it is a personnel issue and all personnel decisions are made by the school.
Patricia McCarthy, spokesperson for Marian High School, also declined to comment, calling it a personnel matter and confidential.
