Child bitten by rattlesnake at U of M botanical gardens

(WXYZ) - University of Michigan Police says a child was reportedly bitten by a rattlesnake at U of M's Matthaei Botanical Gardens today.

The police department received the call around 3 p.m.

We're told the botanical gardens are in a large nature area and they do have a population of massasauga rattlesnakes. The gardens have signs posted for visitor awareness.

The child was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says the massasauga is Michigan's only venomous snake. The DNR reports that it's the smallest rattlesnake and has the least toxic venom comparatively.
