Plans to open a cigar bar in Southfield have gone up in smoke after protests from local cancer survivors.

It was supposed to set up shop in the Southfield mixed-use complex called Arbor Lofts.

For a business, it's all about location and Cigar Fraternity LLC thought it had a good one until the complaints started.

The reason: the American Cancer Society is right next door to the company's planned location.

Letters started flooding city hall last week from cancer survivors trying to convince city council to vote against the cigar bar proposal.

But before that could happen, Monday it was announced at the city council meeting that the company backed out of the deal.
