Group of men help rescue residents from Detroit apartment fire

(WXYZ) - Firefighters were on the scene of an apartment fire on Detroit's west side on Wednesday night.

We're told the fire started in the back stairwell of the basement at Greenbriar Park Apartments.

The apartment complex is located at 11345 Greenfield near Plymouth Road.

Anthony Thomas and his friends are the reason so many people were able to get out of the building safely.

"Me and my team right here, I called 911 and they said, 'go floor to floor and start banging on doors,'" said Thomas.

Thomas came to visit his cousins living at the apartments when he noticed smoke coming from downstairs.

There are 28 units in the building. Thomas and his group went to as many units as they could on all three floors until the growing fire forced them out.

The fire destroyed four to five units and left those families homeless and needing assistance from the Red Cross.
