(WXYZ) - It was meant to be a compliment, but firefighters across the county found nothing flattering in a post on Detroit City Council President Pro-Tem George Cushingberry's Facebook page.
It read, "The Detroit Fire Department is the best bed and breakfast place to work. Especially for young people. Apply today."
The posting was spread through cyber space, shared via Twitter and Facebook. It wasn't the councilman who wrote the words, but his aide, Richard Clement.
"I really apologize to all the firemen and women out there." said Clement in an exclusive interview with Channel 7. "I was trying to compliment them and I used a bad choice of words."
Clement plans on visiting fire stations throughout Detroit to apologize in person and to get a "boots on the ground" view of the challenges Detroit firefighters face. "They have to take money out of their own pockets to fix firehouses, that's insane." said Clement. "Hopefully Cushingberry, who didn't write any post, can write a grant and get some help."
Clement says he has no plans to quit his position with Cushingberry. However, the councilman's social media duties will now be handled by someone else.
