Defense, prosecution comb over juror questionnaires in Kilpatrick corruption case

DETROIT (WXYZ) - The defense lawyers and federal prosecutors for the Kilpatrick corruption trial are meeting today to go over the questionnaires that the prospective jurors filled out earlier this month.

The attorneys have been combing through the extensive questionnaires since Tuesday.  Today they are meeting to come up with their "yes – no- maybe" lists.

If they can agree on a list of "yes" jurors, they will give that to the judge next week. The jurors that the defense lawyers and prosecutors can't agree on will be put on a maybe list.

The attorneys will then argue in front of the judge next week about why those on the maybe list either should or shouldn't be called back in for further questioning.

400 potential jurors filled out the questionnaires.

They have get that down to 80 people to come back for  questioning in open court… and ultimately 18 (12 jurors, 6 alternates) will be chosen to hear the case.

Kwame Kilpatrick said very clearly during a question and answer session in Detroit Thursday night that he doesn't think he can get a fair trial in Detroit.

The questionnaires hold the key to that… and we should know in the coming weeks whether a fair and impartial jury can be chosen for this trial.
