Darrin Campbell “systematically” shot his wife, son and daughter in their rented Avila mansion and then turned the weapon on himself, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators had been trying to determine how the family died since the mansion was found burning Wednesday morning. Deputies say Campbell placed an accelerant and fireworks around the home before shooting himself.
The announcement Friday by the Sheriff’s Office leaves the biggest question about the tragedy unanswered – why? Investigators say Campbell had no history of mental health problems and they’re unsure whether financial problems may have caused what they call a murder-suicide.
The weapon used in the shooting was registered to Campbell, who deputies said also purchased about $600 worth of fireworks three days before the fire.
The Campbell’s both grew up in Southeast Michigan and they started their life together in Canton.
