A new sign along the Detroit-Hamtramck border welcoming people to 'Banglatown' is causing controversy among some community members who disagree with its wording.
A ceremony held Saturday afternoon was meant to unveil the new sign, which is located near Conant Street and Davison Street.
But some Bengali Americans argue the sign has words and symbols that do not accurately represent their community.
The sign used to read, "A Touch of Asian Hospitality" and showed an image of a man riding a rickshaw. Some people believed the rickshaw represents a low-income worker, which they took offense to.
Some community members spray-painted the sign and replaced the image with the American and Bengali flag.
A civic group who raised money to install the sign said they plan to work their differences out and install a new sign.
Detroit City Councilman Scott Benson was pushing for the city of Detroit to install the sign honoring the Bengali American community.
