(WXYZ) - "Have you ever thought you'd see the mayor and council working together?,” says the voice on a Detroit radio ad.
No, we didn't. But this ad, set to hit Detroit radio airwaves April 21st features both Mayor Mike Duggan and City Council President Brenda Jones.
The ad, paid for the Detroit Land Bank Authority, brings Duggan and Jones together to promote the preservation of a Detroit neighborhood.
Action News’ D2020 insider Stephen Henderson can't remember a time when the mayor and council collaborated on anything.
“Talk about unprecedented. This represents cooperation, which is the one thing it seems like we have never had.”
The ad showcases the website buildingdetroit.org which features 12 city-owned properties in East English Village, each home waiting for an owner as long as they are willing to rehab the property and move in.
You'd think such an important project would start with Duggan's voice, but it's Jones that talks of bringing the east-side block back.
Henderson thinks Jones leading the ad is significant.
“We see this a lot now with him trying to make sure she's included make sure she's out front. He wants this to be a partnership and it's not for show."
Even before the ad hits the air, the city reports more than 2,000 people have pre-registered to bid on the properties and the site has seen 500,000 page views.
“We'll see how it works out in terms of actual results actual policy change but this is a pretty good start," says Henderson.
Open houses for the East English properties is April 27th and the first home goes up for auction May 5th. You must be pre-registered to place a bid.
