54th Detroit St. Patrick's Day Parade

DETROIT (WXYZ) - The streets were a sea of green as the 54th Annual St. Patrick's Day parade rolled through Corktown Sunday.

The parade is sponsored by the United Irish Societies. It began at 2:00 p.m. and on Michigan Avenue at Sixth Street and continued down to Fourteen Street.

Dennis Hayes was this year's Grand Marshal, he is a past president of the United Irish Societies.

In 1959, the United Irish Societies, sponsored the first St. Patrick's Parade in Dearborn, MI.

The Parade route followed along Michigan Avenue through the area known as Corktown.

Corktown received it's name as the Irish were the largest ethnic group of newcomers to Detroit, most of them from County Cork.

The Corktown neighborhood is Detroit's oldest surviving neighborhood.
