2/11/13 - In an effort to cut spending, Detroit leaders mandate furlough days to begin for non-union city workers on February 11, 2013.
Many city offices, including the Mayor's Office, the Building Authority, and Human Resources will keep the doors locked until employees return on Tuesday.
The schedule change would save the city millions of dollars if union workers agreed to also participate in the unpaid days off. Mayor Bing says the savings will go to the general fund for the municipality.
Workers must take the furlough days every other Monday, resulting in a ten percent pay cut.
