Can home pregnancy tests detect testicular cancer?

(WXYZ) - Online rumors about a home pregnancy test detecting testicular cancer may have some truth, according to experts.

Social media has been buzzing about a teen who claimed he took a home pregnancy test as a joke. He said he was surprised that it came back positive and later found out, he had testicular cancer.

While his story has not been confirmed, the American Cancer Society says it's possible that it is true.

The same hormone that is used to detect pregnancy in women, can also be excreted by men with testicular cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.

However, the organization warns against using a urine test to detect testicular cancer because urine tests are unreliable and may not detect cancer early enough. The organization also adds that more effective tests are available.
