A controversial issue at Wayne State University will be taken up today with their Board of Governors.

It involves the treatment of dogs during experiments.

Several animal rights groups and doctors say they want Wayne State University to stop using dogs for medical research.

At least one local doctor will be testifying today before the board.

The issue also getting the attention of celebrities. Penny Marshall, the actress who played Laverne, in Laverne & Shirley and legendary comedian Lily Tomlin, who happens to be a Wayne State grad, have both been in the fight to stop the testing on dogs for taxpayer-funded medical research.

Records from the university show from 2010 to 2014, 54 dogs were used.

Last August, a billboard went up near the campus, on the Davidson Freeway at Woodward, showing a dog named Madonna who died in a Wayne State University lab during testing.

Now, the university continues to deny any mistreatment of dogs, saying they are treated humanely.

Still, later this afternoon, the University's Board of Governors will hear testimony and receive petitions from 231 Michigan physicians who are against the experiments...
