(WXYZ) - Police say a couple is facing second-degree murder charges after their two dogs killed a man jogging in Metamora Township.
The dog owners are expected to be arraigned on Friday.
Craig Systma, a 46-year-old man from Livonia, was fatally attacked by two large dogs on July 23.
Sytsma, a colon cancer survivor, was jogging by his place of work - Eltro Services - on Thomas Road near Brauer Road around 5:30 p.m. when he was attacked by two cane corsos dogs.
A neighbor witnessed the attack and tried to help Sytsma, but was unable. He then ran into his house, grabbed a gun and began shooting at the dogs. One of the dogs was wounded.
The dogs ran away, but it was too late for Sytsma.
Sytsma was not identified until the next morning because he had no identification on him. The divorced father of three also lives alone.
When Sytsma's coworkers showed up to work Thursday morning, they discovered his car and that his office was open, both of which were not normal.
His two sons, who also work for the company, identified the body.
According to the dogs' owner, the animals were in a pen, but appeared to have escaped.
The dogs were captured and are currently in the Lapeer County Animal Shelter under quarantine.
