It's National Dog Day and if you don't have a pup to celebrate with, now is the perfect time to think of adopting a new best friend.

Ryan McTigue is with the Michigan Humane Society and he said, "Every day at the Michigan Humane Society is National Dog Day."

With the dog days of summer coming to an end, it's the perfect time to consider bringing a pooch home.

National Dog Day is a celebration of all different pups, from small to large.

They have many dogs are looking for a forever home.

"Very happy people are celebrating dogs. We are hoping that people who may not have a dog in their life might think about considering coming out and visiting one of our locations."

At the Detroit shelter, you will see many cute faces.

Like people, pups have unique personalities.

Some dogs need a little extra care and patience like. But before you decide to adopt a pet - you should ask yourself some questions.

McTigue said, "What kind of time would you have to devote to this animal? Are you an active person? Are you more of a quieter, sit down, slow down type of person? Do you have a big yard? Do you have space for a dog?"

And once you make the decision to get a dog, the Michigan Humane Society wants you to adopt, not shop.

"They are all wonderful," he said. "They are al looking for that second chance and they are all hoping that someone will come out and give them that second chance today. Dogs really do make wonderful companions and lifelong companions."

If you are more of a cat person, National Cat Day is October 29, but you don't have to wait until then to adopt any of the cats at the Michigan Humane Society.
