(WXYZ) - Emergency Financial Manager Roy Roberts says he has voided the contracts of four higher paying Detroit Public Schools positions the Board of Education approved, because—he says—the board violated state law with the appointments.
In a letter to board members, Roberts writes that he had no prior knowledge of a deputy superintendent position, two ombudsmen positions and one senior adjutant position that were all approved by the board.
The deputy superintendent position has an annual salary of $150,000, the ombudsmen positions garner $10,000 a month each and the senior adjutant also collects $10,000 a month.
"At no point in time (either before or after creating the new positions or contracting with persons to fill the new positions) did the Board seek my approval in accordance with Public Act 72. In fact, no one has even attempted to discuss with me the financial impact the salaries and ancillary costs for these new positions will have on the district's budget," wrote Roberts.
Roberts says he has notified his attorneys of the board's action.
