(WXYZ) - A 54-year-old man is in critical condition after being beaten by a group when he pulled over to help a 10-year-old boy he accidentally hit with his truck
Ten-year-old David was running to his friend's house near Balfour in Detroit when police say the boy darted in front of a pick-up truck and the truck hit him.
“David was laying right in front of the driveway and he had blood coming out of his mouth. He couldn’t move his body,“ said James Duston Jr., David’s godfather.
Witnesses tell police and 7 Action News that the driver of the truck, a 54-year-old man, got out to help the boy but before he could reach him, a group of teens and adults jumped the man and started beating him.
“I think it lasted about one minute and then they let him go. And then they jumped back on him again and they did it about three times and finally someone was trying to help the guy that got beat up,” said a witness who did not want to reveal his identity. “It was sad because I knew the guy was getting out of his car to try and see what damage he did,” said the witness.
David’s godfather said the family doesn’t approve of what the group did to the driver.
“We don’t condone that at all. I told his mom and she just was like, no, we wouldn’t want that to happen,” said Duston. “I did see it happening. But my main concern honestly was on David. But then I thought they had stopped. But I don’t know. My concern was on my godson at the time.”
His godson was taken to the hospital to take care of his leg and for additional X-Rays. As for the driver who tried to help him, he is still fighting for his life.
7 Action News spoke with the son of the driver, who said his father has bleeding on the brain and they are waiting to see if he needs brain surgery.
The group also robbed the driver of his wallet.
