Detroit Gold Cup
(WXYZ) - An APBA hydroplane driver crashed during the races at the Detroit Gold Cup on Saturday.
Driver Ryan Mallow crashed his U-100 Jarvis Property Restoration boat in the Unlimited Heat 1B race.
These hydroplane boats can reach speeds near 200 miles per hour during the 2.72 mile course and it can get pretty dangerous on the water.
The 32-year-old driver was approaching turn three during the heat race when his hydroplane flipped.
Mallow was taken to a hospital as a precaution and discharged a short time later.
This was Mallow's first time racing in Detroit.
