Earth timelapse from Google shows changing planet

(WXYZ) - A new Google project is giving people a glimpse at the Earth's changing surfaces over the years.

By using millions of satellite images, Google partnered with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), NASA and TIME  to show how much the earth's surface has changed over a quarter of a century.

The timelapses are truly eye-opening.

The Google official blog says that what they have created is the most comprehensive picture of our changing planet that has ever been made public.

The project includes timelapses from all over the globe.

One shows the rapid growth in Las Vegas, Nevada from 1984 to 2012.

Another shows the Columbia Glacier, and what's really extraordinary is that you can see the glacier retreating at a rapid rate.

The blog says Google hopes the time lapse map can inform the global community to think about how we live on this planet.
