Family dog mauls two-month-old baby to death in Springfield Township home

(WXYZ) - A Springfield Township family is trying to deal with the tragic death of their two-month-old baby boy after he was mauled by their dog.

“Extremely, extremely sad,” is how Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard describes the incident that took place Sunday inside the home in the 8200 block of Tindall Drive.

According to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, an 18-year-old uncle was holding the baby boy on the couch.

“The dog jumped on the couch,” said Bouchard. “They pushed the dog off. The dog turned around and lunged and grabbed the baby. There was nothing provoked, there was no indication it was coming,” he said.

The 26-year-old father, who was in another room, ran to the baby and was able to eventually free his head from the dog’s clutches.

“The father did everything he could to pry the dog’s mouth open, including physically inserting his hands and ends up actually needing stitches to close some of the wounds from trying to get this dog off the baby,” Bouchard said.

The family had owned the dog, a three-and-half-year-old female Catahoula, for more than two years.  The dog is now in the custody of Oakland County Animal Control and will be euthanized.

Bouchard used a post on the department’s Facebook page to warn other families of the danger that animals can present. He hopes no one else suffers the pain this family is enduring right now.

“Animals and tiny babies don’t mix, even with a gentle dog,” Bouchard said. “Sadly, I’ve seen this happen more than once, where they never had any issue and all of a sudden the dog goes off.”
