Family-friendly events to commemorate the Detroit 1967 riots

As we approach the 50th Anniversary of the Detroit Riots on Sunday July 23rd, the weekend will be loaded with commemorative events. Some of them include Kid Zone Activities at the newly renovated Gordon Park, at the intersection of 12th and Clairmount, where the riots took place.

Gordon Park includes a play structure, workout area, covered picnic pavilion and shaded performance area. Seating is available but limited. Lawn chairs or blankets are suggested for this park setting. Food will be available for purchase.

Friday, July 21
Kids Zone activities (including bounce houses and a petting zoo) produced by Brothers Always Together - all day!
1 - 1:35 pm: Detroit Youth Volume
1:50 - 3 pm: 'Nique Love Rhodes
3 - 4 pm: Storytelling
4:30 - 6:30 pm: Family Pictures USA - Grand Finale! presented by Digital Diaspora Family Reunion Roadshow
6:30 - 7:45 pm: Martila Sanders and Gee-Q 
 
Saturday, July 22
Kids Zone activities - all day!
1 - 3 pm: Sound Proof
3 - 7:45 pm: Local Bands
7:45 - 9 pm: Enchantment 
 
Sunday, July 23 
Kids Zone activities & Community art project by Wayne State University Art Galleries - all day!
11 am - noon: Pastor Fred Frederick opens with prayer and song, Tessie Hill performs 
12 - 2 pm: Detroit Public Theatre presents "Detroit 67" by Dominque Morisseau
2:30 - 4 pm: Detroit Historical Society dedication of State Historic Marker 
 
The July 1967 Community Commemoration is presented by Brothers Always Together and the Detroit Historical Society in collaboration with the City of Detroit, Detroit Public Theatre, Digital Diaspora Family Reunion Roadshow and Wayne State University Art Galleries.
