DETROIT (WXYZ) - Family, friends, and former students are remembering the life of a popular coach shot and killed on Tuesday.
The music continues at Jovonnes Lounge on Detroit's west side, but the memory of Charles Knott is why this crowd remains in mourning.
"It's just horrible," said Katrina Holloway, Knott's cousin, "I just thought this was the worst tragedy ever for such a good man to be taken in this manner."
Police say Knott was shot and killed Tuesday night in his vehicle, just outside his home on Petoskey Avenue.
The 54-year-old coached a variety of sports at Detroit's Cody High School for two decades. Former students like Lewis Covile remember a man who emphasized life's X's and O's.
"I could just think back on the many lives that he touched," said Covile, "The students he took home, that he fed, that he clothed, that he paid lunch money to. He did a lot. There aren't many like him."
"He was just kind and loving and caring." said Knott's friend Kena Mitchell, "He cared so much about the kids."
As police continue to look for a motive and search for suspects, Knott's loved ones say his departure means Detroit has lost a part of what it may need the most.
"You still lose another positive individual." said Knott's brother Fred Harris, "And we're so short of them, especially in this city."
Coach Knott leaves behind a son, three daughters, and five grandchildren, but he also leaves behind a generation of student athletes who looked up to him as a father figure.
A trust fund has been set up to help the Knott family with funeral costs. You can make a donation to the "Coach Knott Fund" at any Chase Bank.
