Family of murdered teacher speaks out

DETROIT, Mich. (WXYZ) - As Detroit Police continue to look for suspects in the shooting death of a popular teacher, Robert Barnes' family is speaking out in hopes that those with clues to the shooting do the same.

"I just know he won't be able to see me graduate this year." said David Barnes, the 17-year-old son of Robert Barnes.

As the teen now grapples with the thought of life without a loved one, the case behind his father's death remains a mystery. Barnes was shot eight times while gathering with friends Tuesday night near Holbrook and Brush in Detroit.

"He didn't deserve this at all," said Barnes' sister in law Hillaurie Storey-Little.

A popular teacher at the Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences, Barnes' passion revolved around mentoring young minds. In addition to his academy students, the 44-year-old leaves behind a wife and four young children.

"And nobody is saying anything. That's what hurts the most." said Storey-Little, "People don't get shot eight times and don't' say anything when you're in a crowd of people."

While the community mourns the loss of a father and mentor, the Barnes family says the pain is even greater when those who can help remain quiet.

"Even finding out is not going to heal any of the wounds because he's gone." said Storey-Little, "And he shouldn't be gone. But we need help. Because it shouldn't happen and nobody is speaking up. Nobody is saying anything."
