Fatal shooting on Detroit's east side hours after mayoral forum discussed violence

(WXYZ) - Police in Detroit are investigating a fatal shooting near the intersection of 8 Mile Road and Gratiot on the city's east side.

Police say one male has been shot to death.  They have another male in custody and he is cooperating. Both men were in the parking lot of the gas station on the corner when the police arrived on scene.

Witnesses say there might have been a struggle, but it is unclear exactly where the shooting happened.

The shooting came just hours after a mayoral forum in Detroit where violence was a major talking point.

Residents from around the city, including the east side, listened to five declared candidates running for mayor.

Candidates attending included: Krystal Crittendon, Mike Duggan, Lisa Howze, Benny Napoleon, and Fred Durhal.

The forum was designed so people in Detroit could get to know the mayoral candidates better.  Each candidate talked about why they are running, and then the audience got to write down questions for them to answer.

At least 100 people were in attendance Wednesday night.
