FBI terror fugitive has Detroit ties

DETROIT (WXYZ) - A suspected terrorist with ties to the Detroit area made a dubious FBI list, as the search for Ahmad Abousamra remains worldwide. Abousamra is now #30 on the FBI's "Most Wanted Terrorists" list.

Abousamra was born in France, raised in Massachusetts, and could be living in Syria. But federal investigators have their eye on the Motor City.

"So he spent most of his substantive years in the Boston area," said Kieran Ramsey, Assistant Special Agent with the FBI's Boston Division, "However we do know his family or some of his family has moved to the Greater Detroit area."

Through special agents in Boston, we're learning the parents of Abousamra live in the Detroit area.

"While they are there, we do recognize that Mr. Abousamra is charged on his own as an adult." said Ramsey, "And we do recognize the family's right to some level of privacy in this regard."

Investigators say Abousamra allegedly attempted to obtain military training for the purpose of killing American soldiers overseas. The FBI hopes residents in Detroit, in Boston, the entire world look closely for a man investigators describe as armed and dangerous.

FBI agents say Abousamra is 5'11'' with a thin build and has a distinctive, higher pitched voice.

"We are leaving no stone unturned," said Ramsey, "And we are leveraging every resource so that Mr. Abousamra is brought back to the district of Massachusetts to face the charges pending against him. He has a 9 count federal indictment against him in federal court in Massachusetts."

The FBI in Detroit is working with Boston's division to reach out to Abousamra's Detroit family members. Investigators say Abousamra's family has been interviewed multiple times about his whereabouts over the years.

A $50,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the capture and return of Abousamra to the United States.
