(WXYZ) - It’s a medical breakthrough—and it’s all thanks to 3D printing technology.
A company in Connecticut has announced that their patient-specific 3D printed implant for facial reconstruction has been cleared by the Federal Drug Administration.
The company says that its device is the only FDA-cleared 3D printed facial implant.
The implants, made by Oxford Performance Materials, are bio-compatible, and mechanically similar to bone. They also support bone attachment.
The implants could be printed specific to the patient’s needs based off of MRI or CT digital image files from surgeons.
Company officials say this technology will help treat the highly complex anatomy in a highly effective and economical way. They’re saying this could open doors to provide more people with great healthcare at a lower cost all over the world.
