Find out which flu vaccine is right for you

(WXYZ) - There are several new flu vaccines available this year. For the first time, you can get a vaccine that protects from four strains of the flu, instead of the usual three.

Typically, flu shots provide protection against two strains of influenza A and one strain of influenza B. The Quadrivalent vaccine provides protection against two strains of influenza A and two strains of influenza B.

The Quadrivalent vaccine is available as a nasal spray and as a shot.

All nasal sprays manufactured this year will contain the Quadrivalent vaccine.

The nasal spray vaccine is not approved for pregnant women, but it is available for others between the ages of 2 and 49 years old.

The Quadrivalent vaccine shot is approved for people six months old and older.

Health leaders recommend children receive the Quadrivalent vaccine because it should provide the most protection.

The Trivalent Recombinant influenza vaccine is also new this year. It's manufactured without the use of eggs and is recommended for people between the ages of 18 and 49 who have severe egg allergies.

The standard flu shot is also available, which offers protection against three strains of influenza.

People who have a strong fear of needles may want to request the Fluzone Intradermal vaccine. It's administered using a microneedle and is injected into the skin instead of the muscle. That vaccine is approved for people between 18 and 64 years old.

Seniors also have another vaccine option. Since they're less likely to benefit from the standard flu shot, a high-dose vaccine is also being offered for people older than 65. Fluzone High-Dose offers protection against three strains of influenza, but is administered in a dose that is four times stronger than the standard vaccine.
