(WXYZ) - Fire tore through a West Bloomfield Township home around 4 o'clock Friday morning.
The 6,300 square foot house is on Pontiac Trail along Orchard Lake.
Investigators say the homeowners were asleep when one of them woke up after smelling smoke.
"Then her husband looked out. He could see an orange glow which indicates to us it was pretty far advanced at that point," says Patrick Riney, West Bloomfield Fire Marshall.
When firefighters arrived flames were shooting through the roof on the east side of the home.
It's not clear how the fire started, but investigators believe it started in the attic.
Smoke detectors did go off and both husband and wife made it out of the home safely.
They'd been living in that home for the 20 years.
The fire marshall believes the home is a total loss, but he says the final say will come from the homeowners and the insurance company.
