(WXYZ) - A firefighter was injured while attempting a daring rescue at an apartment fire on Detroit's east side.
It happened around midnight Tuesday in the 2400 block of Hurlbut Street between Kercheval and E. Vernor Hwy.
A fire chief at the scene tells 7 Action News, thick black smoke was pouring out of the building -- home to several senior citizens -- when fire crews arrived.
We're told a firefighter went inside and was carrying a victim out when he took a hard fall on the stairs. The firefighter was taken to the hospital with neck and back pain.
Three other children were taken to the hospital to get checked out for smoke inhalation.
There's still no word on what caused the fire.
