Firefighters pitch in to help cleanup Detroit neighborhood

DETROIT (WXYZ) - For two days, Detroit firefighters volunteered their time to help cleanup a neighborhood in southwest Detroit. And they weren't alone. Firefighters from Wayne-Westland, Shelby Township, Fraser and Imlay City joined them and people living nearby to help make the neighborhood a better place to live.
Together they boarded up homes and hauled away, at least, four massive dumpsters full of debris.
Detroit firefighters only began planning the two-day cleanup on Monday after seeing that the neighborhood around Horatio and Campbell was home to many residents working hard to keep it viable. Residents just needed a little extra help.
Attention recently came to the neighborhood when Nicole Curtis, host of Rehab Addict on the DIY Network, began renovating a home in the area.
Curtis, a native Detroiter, says six episodes featuring the renovation of the Detroit home are set to air in early 2014.
Curtis selected a house that had been burned to highlight the opportunity to restore and save some homes instead of simply demolishing them.
