Warren mayor, police crack down on fireworks

(WXYZ) - Fireworks went off all over the metro Friday night, but one mayor vowed to crack down.

Following the mayor and police on the streets of Warren, it didn't take long to find folks violating the city's strict fireworks ordinance.

And when confronted, some weren't happy.

"Its not in the street!", yelled one homeowner when told by police he was in violation. His fireworks were being set off on the lawn--not 30 feet from the home--a violation.

People face a hefty fine if minors are setting off fireworks, it is within 30 feet of a house, in the middle of the street, or after 11pm. The rules come from Mayor Jim Fouts, who is unapologetic.

"People are shooting dynamite off in the street," he says.

And get this irony: we walked a few doors down from the mayor's house, and met a fireworks-loving family shooting fireworks into the air--from the street.

The young man shooting the fireworks said of his mayoral neighbor and his rule:

"I don't care."
