People at Vernor Elementary School in Detroit say their school is in such disrepair, it is turning into an unhealthy place to work and learn.

Sources showed us pictures of leaks throughout the building.

We were also allowed in the building by sources to see damage in the auditorium for ourselves. The roof is leaking in numerous places, over the stage, over audience seats and in aisle ways.

When 7 Action News told one grandfather picking up his granddaughter about the problem, he was shocked the roof had been allowed to leak for so long.

"I am outraged, upset, angry. My granddaughter goes here," he said.

He is also afraid. The preschool age little girl he loves so much has asthma.  He knows that water damaged buildings unaddressed grow mold.  He fears the consequences could be serious.

"You have to understand, this is my heart, somebody I love. So anything that would impair her in anyway, that's a no no... I am getting angry."

Detroit Public Schools says  Vernor Elementary is one of the District’s schools that is in need of a complete roof replacement, which will cost approximately $600,000.

The District says it has fixed the roof repeatedly over the last year, and crews are aware of the problem.

The school was inspected by the City of Detroit last month. It received citations and the District has a corrective action plan to address issues.

On Friday evening DPS said a contractor is scheduled to conduct work on buckling flooring. The District is partnering with the Detroit Public School Foundation to launch a Capital Improvement Fund, and potential donors can call (313) 873-8976.

Parents say the district should have addressed building issues long before they got to this point.

"Fix it fast," requested one third grader who says there are leaks in her classroom.
