Former Detroit Police Lieutenant David Hansberry and former officer Bryan Watson were sentenced Wednesday for conspiracy to commit extortion in what federal prosecutors say was a scheme rooted in greed.

Investigators say the two men conspired to rob drug dealers and steal money and drugs obtained during searches.

Hansberry and Watson were only convicted on one of count of conspiracy to commit extortion, but the jury found them not guilty on the other charges that included drug crimes.

Watson was sentenced to nine years in prison.

Hansberry received a sentence of nearly 13 years behind bars.

Both men are launching appeals.
