Former GOP presidential candidate Santorum speaks at Grosse Pointe South High School

GROSSE POINTE FARMS, Mich. (WXYZ) - Former GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum  spoke today at Grosse Pointe South High School after a compromise between administrators and  the student organization Young Americans for Freedom.

The speech had been canceled after national representatives for Young Americans for Freedom said Santorum had never spoken at a high school before, and they would not provide a copy of his speech prior to the event.

A press release says Grosse Pointe South "recognizes Mr. Santorum's leadership qualities" and that "the district has been assured the primary focus of his remarks will be on leadership and community service – two qualities we seek to instill in our students."

Those who wished not to participate continued with their regularly scheduled school day. Parents were given a permission form to sign in order for students to attend the speech.

The assembly is for Grosse Pointe South students and staff only.
