A free adoption event helped find loving homes for more than 2,100 pets.

"Empty the Shelters" was sponsored by Bissell Pet Foundation on Saturday.  The organization covered all adoption fees.

Each pet adopted from a shelter created space for another pet to be taken in.

This "Empty the Shelters" event was the largest event to date and included organizations from the upper and lower peninsulas.

It also broke a record for the most adoptions.

"It was heartwarming to see so many parents come to the event with their children," said Cathy Bissell, Founder of the Bissell Pet Foundation.  "It's so important to have the whole family together to select the right pet."

The breakdown of adoptions was 887 dogs, 1,244 kittens and 21 other.
