(WXYZ) - Are you a frequent tweeter? Do you post on Facebook often? Well, extensive social media use could mean you're a narcissist, according to a new study.
The study from the
University of Michigan apparently explores how social media reflects and enhances our culture's growing levels of narcissism.
Researchers say that college students who post more often on Twitter, scored higher in certain types of narcissism including superiority, authority and self-sufficiency.
And among middle-aged participants, researchers found that narcissists were quick to status update on Facebook.
"It's about curating your own image, how you are seen, and also checking on how others respond to this image," said U-M researcher Elliot Panek in a
press release. "Middle-aged adults usually have already formed their social selves, and they use social media to gain approval from those who are already in their social circles."
The study apparently shows that social media is used in different ways to boost the egos of narcissistic college students and their middle-aged counterparts.
Researchers say they weren't able to figure out whether narcissism makes people use social media more, or whether social media use makes people more narcissistic.
