(WXYZ) - They happened on Thursday just miles and minutes apart. Several people attended the arraignment of 36-year-old Bassel Saad in Livonia as his charges were upgraded from Assault to Second Degree Murder.
Then, they drove to Redford to attend the funeral of John Bieniewicz who was a husband, father and victim of a tragic incident.
Bieniewicz was working as a referee at an adult-league soccer game in Livonia on Sunday when he was "sucker punched" and died two days later.
Saad turned himself in to police. His defense attorney admitted today his client fled the scene Sunday because he thought things would escalate.
The referee had tossed Saad out of the game for a foul.
Dozens attended the funeral, not because they knew the victim, but because they saw his case on the news and wanted to pay tribute.
They said they didn't want revenge but justice and that Saad needs to do prison time. Some said life in prison.
They've also established a fund for donations to his family: JohnBieniewiczMemorial.com.
