Gas tax debate to fix MI roads

(WXYZ) - State lawmakers are currently considering doubling the state tax  for a gallon of gas to fix all the pothole-filled roads in the area.

Right now, Michigan has a 19 cents a gallon tax. Sunoco gas station owner Paul Lutfy says his business is already loaded with taxes.

“If I sell $100,000 a month at 19 cents a gallon that is… just this gas station alone contributes $19,000 to the state,” said Lufty.

According to Lufty, that is each month.  Overall, he told 7 Action News he is taxed 58 cents a gallon by the state and federal government.

Earlier Wednesday, state lawmakers shut down another idea which would have increased the sales tax by 1%.
