The City of Royal Oak is in mourning after the loss of 15-year-old police K-9, Rex.

The city said in a Facebook statement that Rex died last week in the arms of his handler, Sgt. Brian Zelakiewicz, and surrounded by his family.

Rex served the Royal Oak Police Department for seven years. His specialty was narcotics and he was often called on by the county’s narcotics team to assist with search warrants and pursuing known drug traffickers.

But apparently, Rex had a soft spot for children and was often taken to the local schools.

Before rex passed away, he took one last ride with this longtime partner in a ROPD K-9 car so the duo could say their goodbyes.

“Rex was truly a gentile warrior and will be missed by his family and our entire community,” the city said.
