Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts battles blood and bone marrow disease

(WXYZ) - Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts announced Monday morning that she is battling a disease of the blood and bone marrow.

Roberts, who battled and beat breast cancer five years ago, announced that she has been diagnosed with a disease called MDS or myelodysplastic syndrome.

She says it's a disease that was once known as preleukemia.

Doctors tell Roberts that she is young and fit and will tackle the disease.

Roberts will begin chemotherapy ahead of a bone marrow transplant to take place later this year. Her sister is a good match and Roberts says this improves the chances for a cure.

She will continue to anchor GMA while undergoing treatment, but will take time off when she undergoes the transplant.
