Handyman Joe Gentz sentenced 17-28 years prison in Jane Bashara murder case

(WXYZ) - Handyman Joseph Gentz was sentenced to 17 to 28 years in prison for the murder of Grosse Pointe mother and wife Jane Bashara.

During the sentencing, Jane's sister read a statement saying "She had a long life ahead of her. She had a lot she wanted and needed to accomplish." "Her senseless murder has left an open wound in our family that will never really heal."

Before reading the sentencing Gentz, apologized to the Bashara family and to his own, "I am very very sorry for what happened. I am asking the family for forgiveness for what I have done."

Gentz previously pled guilty to second degree murder charges and told investigators he strangled Jane because her husband -- Bob Bashara -- made him do it.

While Bob Bashara has not been charged in connection with his wife's murder, he is serving up to 20 years in prison after admitting he tried to hire a hitman to kill Gentz in Wayne County Jail.
