Home intruder shot in chest by homeowner in Detroit

DETROIT (WXYZ) - Detroit Police say a man broke into a house around 6:00 am Monday and was shot in the chest by the homeowner.

The intruder escaped, got into his car, and drove a couple of miles to a Marathon gas station off of Van Dyke near 8 Mile.

Surveillance video from the store shows the suspect walking inside and holding his chest. He told the owner and a clerk that he had been shot. A worker called 911.

Within a minute, police arrived and rushed the suspect to the hospital.

He is listed in critical condition.

The police have not said whether the homeowner had a permit for the gun but it is likely he will not be charged.
